DAY THREE - 17 April 2011: Sausalito

Sunday morning in San Fran - breakfast at Sears (they were queuing outside!). The food is GORGEOUS and the place has been kept like an old fashioned diner - with the original cabinets and stoves. We had Eggs Florentine with hash browns, but the hash browns bore no relation to the horrible brown things we're used to. These were delicate strips of potato, golden and crispy on the top sitting next to two runny poached eggs nestling in a bed of spinach on top of 'English' muffins smothered in a hollandaise sauce!  Bliss, and enough to last for the rest of the day! (Hmmm.. is this turning into a food blog?)

On to the trolley bus to Pier 39 for the ferry to Sausalito.  The trolleys have been bought up from different countries, saved from being scrapped by SF and put into service all over the city. The one we were on was originally from Milan, pre-war, and the exit/entry signs were still in Italian.

We booked the ferry tickets and had a walk around the pier. Surprised by loud barking noises and the strong smell of fish, we noticed (duh!) loads of sea lions basking in the dock. Apparently there can be up to 900 in the winter months and they've taken up residence there because of the large herring supply.  And, believe me, you can smell it!
This restaurant was built by an eccentric millionaire (of course) and you can dine below water level as you're propelled around the bay! The millionaire's name is Kiddoo...
The ferry ride takes about 90 minutes and stops at Angel Island, Triburon and then Sausalito.  It's very beautiful and reminded us of Bay of Islands in NZ (Jo!)...

Rather than taking the ferry back to SF, we hopped on a tour bus to go back over the Golden Gate Bridge. One word - Windy!

Another word - Foggy!

In the evening we decided to treat ourselves to dinner at a vegetarian restaurant called Millennium. Reading the menu was like learning a different language.  What is Huitlacoche Tamale when it's at home?
Expensive! Pretentious! Up it's own endive, that's what it is!
